UNITED NATIONS

United Nations (UN) is an intergovernmental organization established on October 24 1945, to maintain international peace and security, promote human rights, foster social and economic development, protect the environment, and provide humanitarian aid in cases of famine, natural disaster, and armed conflict. The UN represents an annual global market of over $15 billion for a variety of products and services. The UN publishes its procurement opportunities from 18 specialized organizations through UNGM (United Nations Global Marketplace), which is the common procurement portal of the UN system of organizations. These 18 organizations account for 99% of the total UN procurement budget. The UN maintains and administers a number of organizations, which encourage participation of the private sector in the development process of emerging countries:

United Nations Development Program (UNDP) -UNDP’s support for Millennium Development Goals plays a key role in promoting private sector development of inclusive markets. Every year, the organization spends approximately $3 billion buying 3,500 categories of goods and services, which accounts for 47% of its annual expenditure; it is one of the largest procurers in the UN system.

United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) -Their mandate is to encourage socio-economic cooperation amongst its member states, and to promote international cooperation for the development of Africa as one entity.

United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) Its purpose is to contribute to peace and security by promoting collaboration among the nations through education, science and culture. It’s the heir of the “Intellectual” agency of the UN, established in 1845. $22 Million has been allocated during the biennium 2010-2011 under the current partnership with the private sector.

United Nations Industrial Development Organizations (UNIDO) – One of UN’s specialized agencies, it promotes and accelerates inclusive and sustainable industrial development in emerging countries and economies in transition. In 2013, total value of procured goods and services it undertook was $100 million, accounting for more than 40% of UNIDO’s Technical Cooperation delivery. Hence, procurement plays an important role in helping UNIDO deliver its Technical Cooperation Program.

United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS) - UNOPS focuses on the infrastructure needed for development in distant countries such as Afghanistan and Indonesia.   Procurement is an integral part of the expert support; the agency procures around $800 million worth of goods and services each year. They aid support on behalf of their partners, which include - the UN, donor and recipient governments, intergovernmental and non-governmental organizations, international and regional financial institutions/ foundations and partners from the private sector as well.
